Top 10 Most Endangered Species

#1 Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis)

Since 1970, the Black Rhino population, native to southern and east Africa, has declined by 90% to less than 3,000. They are killed primarily for their horns. Trade of Rhinos has been banned for more than twenty years. Although having banned trading of the species, there still continues to be a great demand for Rhino parts.

#2 Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)

Within a few short years, Giant Pandas could be facing extinction. Fewer than 1,000 remain in their native habitat of China. The main reason for their decline is due to loss of natural habitat and poaching.

#3 Tiger (Panthera tigris)

These magnificent cats are native to tropical zones in Southeast Asia and temperate regions like the Russian Far East. Less than 6,000 tigers remain in the wild. The most urgent threat to the species is poaching for body parts and bones used in traditional Asian medicines.

#4 Beluga Sturgeon(Huso huso)

These ancient living fish fossils are found in the Caspian Sea. Valued throughout the world by connoisseurs for their superior quality caviar, poaching is out of control due to excessive demand and high prices paid for the Sturgeons’ “pearl-like” caviar.

#5 Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

The perennial Goldenseal herb is favored by naturopathists for its ability to heal numerous ailments from haemorrhoids to allergies. Home in the hardwood forests of North America, the demand for this cure-all perennial herb has recently leaped more than 30%.

#6 Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macroclemys temminckii)

Prized by turtle trappers and dealers for its rare meat, Alligator Snapping Turtles, the largest of freshwater turtles from North America, is quickly being depleted due to increased shipments to many international world markets including Asia.

#7 Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)

Found mainly around tropical reefs, the three foot (one metre) length Hawksbill Turtle species, named for its distinctive snout, is becoming extremely vulnerable due to their slow reproduction rates and high volume of illegal trade for the prized jewel-like “tortoise shell.

#8 Big Leaf Mahogany(Swietenia macrophylla King)

Demand for the red colored wood goes unabated because of worldwide consumer demand for quality mahogany hardwood furniture. Although mahogany trees are widely distributed in tropical forests from Mexico to the Amazon Basin, the species grows naturally only as individual trees rather than in groups of large forest stands. Wholesale stripping of Amazon forests has resulted in perhaps 70 per cent of the world’s supply being depleted.

#9 Green-Cheeked Parrot(Amazona viridigenalis)

Native to Mexico, this colorful parrot species, with the ability to mimic the human voice, has been significantly reduced in numbers due to a huge demand for these lovely pet birds, especially from the United States. Even after prohibiting the sale of these green-cheeked birds, droves of the species are still being illegally traded across the Mexico/US border.

#10 Mako Shark (Isurus spp.)

The Mako Shark is highly sought for its tender meat, and especially in Asian markets, for their shark fins which have even greater value for medicinal purposes. Some of the species are merely stripped of their prized fins by the international fishing fleets and then are thrown back into the depths, left to die.

Fins are now among the world’s most expensive fisheries products. Values vary according to color, size, and thickness of fins. In Hong Kong, shark fin soup can fetch almost US$100 for a single serving, and wholesale pricing for fins can range from a low of US$40 to more than US$550 per kilo. As with most shark species, Mako Sharks are particularly susceptible to overfishing because they have long life cycles, resulting in the species being fished twice as fast as they are able to produce. Mako Sharks mature in seven to twelve years and only then produce small litters of baby sharks in their lifetime.

Top 10 Football Players In The World 2010

Based on the FIFA player of the year, on the football news,  we succeeded in putting together a list of the top 10 football players in the world. Some picks might differ between a site and another since the football experts of ESPN.com or SI.com are way different from the soccer experts of Eurosport.com or CBSsports.

Here is our opinion about the best football players on the planet, starting with the best football player without any doubt, Lionel Messi.

1-      Lionel Messi is an Argentinean football player who features for the FC Barcelona in the Spanish football league and other European football tournaments such as the Champions League. Lionel MEssi is among the most awaited football players during the World Cup 2010 due to his exceptional football shoes tricks and magical football skills.

2-      Cristiano Ronaldo has newly joined the Real Madrid; after leading the Manchester United until the Champions League finals against Barcelona where the Man Utd lost, Ronaldo’s popularity was starting to decrease in the English Premier League. After being signed by Real Madrid, Ronaldo is also one of the best soccer players in the world, widely known for his goal scoring techniques and accurate striker’s shots.

3-      Zlatan Ibrahimovic just made it to FC Barcelona; as a football transfer between Barca and Inter Milan got tackled, Ibra was substituted by Samuel Eto’O who was transferred towards the Italian League while Ibrahimovic got signed by the football team of Pep Guardiola.

4-     Steven Gerrard or Stevie G is among the most dangerous football strikers in the world; as a captain of Liverpool, Gerrard is expected to lead the English football team in South Africa 2010 as the team tackles the FIFA World Cup under the supervision of Coach Fabio Capello.

5-      Samuel Eto’o features for Inter Milan; Eto’o was the top scorer of Barcelona until the deal with Inter Milan obliged him to exchange places with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In the World Cup 2010, Samuel Eto’o will lead the Cameroon football team, perhaps crafting a new surprise by qualifying into the final rounds of the Fifa World Cup tournament.

6-      KAKA quit playing for AC Milan and joined Real Madrid along with Cristiano Ronaldo to form one the most dangerous offensive lineups in the world; although Kaka occupies the midfield spot, he remains one of the most skilled strikers when it comes to scoring goals.

7-      Xavi Hernandez of FC Barcelona is also one of the football players who won the Euro Championship with spain Vs Germany; Xavi is far from being the fastest football player or the most talented football player but his job in controlling the midfield of every football field grants him the title of one of the best midfielders in the world.

8-      Andres Iniesta, Barca player, is considered as one of the main elements in the team; Guardiola counts on Inesta to deliver the balls towards the strikers. Iniesta, referring to football news and sports experts, is one of the most underrated football players in the world, maybe due to the lack of TV appearances or marketing and endorsement deals.

9-      Frank Lampard,Chelsea football team’s idol, is one of the most consistent and persistent football players on many levels. Eith [removed][removed] er in the EPL English Premier League fixtures or in the European football tournaments, the Chelsea midfield player has marked the English football with his skills and potential to create decent occasions and lead his team in the Premiership fixtures.

10-   Fernando Torres, Spanish striker and one of the most talented goal scorers in the world, will be featuring along his Spanish team mates in the World cup 2010; after winning the European Championship with the Spaniards, Torres will have to demonstrate some real football skills to overcome his bad football results and low football scores with Liverpool throughout the Premier League and the Champions League.

1. Schindler’s List (1993) : Steven Spielberg’s defining moment to his career was a movie very difficult for him to make due to his heritage. 2. Braveheart (1995) : Mel Gibson masterpiece Epic story of William Wallace, a peasant Scot who led an uprising against the heavily armed Brits in th 14th century, very inspiring tale of the underdog stepping up and challenging the bully. Sad tale full of great characters, acting, score and cinematography, very symbolic scenes and very memorable quotes throughout. It boasts one of the most realistic battle scenes ever to be captured on film. A movie for the ages.

3. The Godfather II (1974) : As great as The Godfather was, I thought the sequel was more entertaining, not to mention it had Robert De Niro, one of my favorite actors play Vito Corleone, Michael’s Dad, as a youngster in New York and how he claimed the title of Godfather. I like the way the movie went back and forth from the early days of Vito to the current days of Michael as the Godfather, again very similar to the first movie but a slight nod to this one as the better of the 2.

4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) : Set in a mental institution, this movie focuses on a man deemed insane but is very sane most of the time, just crazy at times. Jack Nicholson delivers a /stirring account of McMurphy as the movie focuses on life in a mental institution and the desire to be set free. A real tear-jerker and one of the best cast performances I have ever seen. Good music to fit the mood and great dialogue.

5. The Godfather (1972) : Francis Ford Coppola’s Masterpiece and the beginning of a saga, The Godfather ranks #1 among all viewers on The Internet Movie Database. A gem of a movie which focuses on the organized crime family the Corleones. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino play the Godfather and his son Michael, the heir to the title and their dealings with the other families. A sad, tragic story about crime and how it affects everyone involved, legendary acting, great music that will last a lifetime and beautiful scenery solidify this movie as one of the best ever made.

6. Forrest Gump (1994) : I admit I love this movie even though in hindsight I think Shawshank Redemption should have won that year. Tom Hanks winsbest actor for the second year in a row for his portrayal of Forrest Gump, a simple man from Alabama who is not the smartest person, the movie follows him through extraordinary eras in our lifetime, from Vietnam, to ping pong championships, to his historic cross country running, Forrest keeps it simple and focuses on his childhood love Jenny, a love that carried him through strenuous times in his life. An instant classic and a very rewarding picture.

7. Rain Man (1988) : In this Barry Levinson film, Dustin Hoffman steals the show again in yet again another best actor role alongside Tom Cruise in a story about a man (Cruise) who is informed he has a brother who is autistic and the journey to find the love he has for him. Hoffman portrays Raymond to perfection, the film is touching and the acting is superb.

8. The Sting (1973) : A funny and witty con man comedy starring the now infamous duo of Robert Redford and Paul Newman in this movie about a con of a lifetime at the racetrack. There is great chemistry between the two actors, one of the best in cinematic history, the two also buddied up in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. A real feel good of a movie that’s very enjoyable even 30 years later.

9. Titanic (1997) : The highest grossing film of all time, Titanic also cost the most to date at $200 million. Many thought this would be its downfall, a historical story translated into Hollywood terms with special effects. James Cameron, as only he can do , directed a fantastic tale of a peasant boy played by Leo DiCaprio and his romance with the daughter of rich folk (Kate Winslet) whose romance was outlawed in the midst of the worst ship disaster ever. Good performances throughout, very believable action scenes as the ship sinks, heart-wrenching to see the people perish in the disaster. A great cinematic achievement.

10. Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) : A truly sweet and heartwarming drama about a custody battle between two adults. Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep deliver astounding emotional performances that were as real as they can get. Great dialogue and very believable everyday life events, a classic in every sense of the word, one of Hoffman’s best roles in his career.
